Homemade versus Store-bought: Why not do both?

Sure, giving someone a tin of cookies for their birthday is sweet, but why not come up with something a bit cooler this year? Nothing says “I love you,” more than an inappropriate inside joke custom printed on the front of your t-shirt.

When it comes to the battle of homemade verses store-bought, the battle rages on: Making something at home is cheap, buying something shows value and style. Or making something at home is thoughtful, whereas buying something from a mall is impersonal.

There are huge lists of pros and cons, and when it comes to buying or making for that difficult weirdo on your list, sometimes it might be easier just to slip a fifty in a card and call it a day. But has it come to that?

Get real. When store-bought crap comes off as careless and homemade gifts come across as tacky, custom t-shirts swoop in on a superman cape and save the day. Keep it personal and brand spankin’ new. Touch their hearts and keep it stylish.

Afraid your creativity falls short? Have zero skill? Can’t think for yourself? Wordans still has your back, with thousands of pre-designed images, colours, sweet movie posters, band shirts, and our online design application is idiot-proof.

There. You have no excuse. Start making cool gifts for everyone and let them think you are a creative fashionable genius.

Isn’t it time to upgrade the homemade gift? Isn’t it time to make the store-bought gift more heartfelt? Aren’t you tired of feeling like you’re having an aneurysm every time you go tearing through the mall in a frenzy to find something, or up to your arms in macaroni noodles, glitter and paste every time you try and express yourself for a friend?

Are homemade gifts really  cheaper, anyway? Nah. By the time you go buying every individual piece, (eggs or craft paper, Poloroid film or a picture frame) you’ve probably spent way more than you intended and the thing still may end up in the trash in a few months.

Maybe the person you have in mind hates surprises, anyway. So here’s what you do. Grab a 6-pack of beer and both of you sit down in front of the computer and make t-shirts together. Matching t-shirts. And then go on a pub crawl. Or church meeting. Whatever.

Stop being that boring person who gives socks or banana bread. Start making rad t-shirts. (Or hoodies, tank tops, sweet posters, tote bags…) The possibilities are endless. Put the personality back into your presents and give ‘em something that’s the best of both worlds.

Valentine's Day: A time to be creative

You all realize it’s Valentine’s Day this weekend, right? Say what you will but I personally love this extra themed day in the calendar-year where I could give a gift to – and receive a gift from – the man I love. Even when I was single I’d still do something for Valentine’s Day. At the very least, I’d mail funny Valentine’s Day cards to friends, just to get some laughs and some smiles (and who doesn’t like getting mail?).

Vintage Valentine's Day card

Everybody knows someone who outwardly detests Valentine’s Day (maybe that person is you) but I’m willing to bet you a million bucks that even these hardened-souls go home and secretly mark the day in some small way. They cave-in because they don’t want to be the ones to pee on a friend’s parade, on their partner/spouse’s or worse, on a kid’s parade. It doesn’t have to be cliché-laden with the sexy apparel or red-velvet-heart-shaped-box-of-chocolates…but then again, maybe it should as it would represent you better. After all, you would make fun of the ostentatiousness that Valentine’s Day has admittedly become, so you can be ironic about the whole thing with your loved one… That works too, no?

My point is, don’t let everyone else tell you how you should feel about Valentine’s Day. Make it your own! If you really feel like it’s a fake-holiday created to support the greeting-card or wedding industries… then don’t buy a card or propose (or allow yourself to be proposed to) on February 14th. It’s as simple as that, isn’t it?

I myself am proud to be a low-key-yet-cheesy-type-of-gal for Valentine’s Day. I do the whole breakfast-in-bed-with-heart-shaped-French-toast-dusted-with-icing-sugar-thing for my man, which he loves. Try this recipe from The Food Network or this one from Canadian Living (you just need a giant heart-shaped cookie cutter). This year, staying true to myself, I’m designing lounge pants for him. He spends his nights in them when we’re alone at home but they’re pretty generic. The ones I’m making are custom and will always remind him of my love for him (I know, I know… Please contain your laughter ;) .

So, I chose navy blue sweatpants. On which I’m positioning a design I created, on the upper right thigh that says “Ljubim te“, which means I love you in Slovenian (he’s Canadian-Slovenian) and the kicker is that I’m flipping the design 180 degrees so that he can read it when he looks down (kinda like in the image below). Awww, are your teeth decaying from the sweetness? Hehe.

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

Let’s face it, Mother’s day was invented because we don’t cherish and thank our mothers as much as we should. I mean, think of the sacrifice and love a mother gives to her children, that’s worth at least one day of veneration!

If you’re anything like me, you probably haven’t thought about what to get her except for a hallmark card and a bunch of flowers, and you’re probably going to buy all of the above at the nearby corner store. A gift that says “When I stop for gas I think about you” is probably not the best a mom can ask for…

Your mother spent 9 months of her life bearing you, and a lifetime looking after you! She deserves the type of gift that shows thought and appreciation. You need to make her smile and feel appreciated!

Lucky for me, I work at Wordans.com, so I know all about making great mother’s day gifts now. Last year, I made the obvious “I Love my Mom” T-shirt,  she was pretty happy, but I knew I could do better.

Custom t-shirt gifts is about using your creativity, turning a memorable or funny moment into a t-shirt shrine, or printing in big bold letters a message you want to share with the world.

This year, I’m using one of my favorite Wordans t-shirt designs to share an inside joke with my mom. When I moved out, my mother got a small chihuaha, and I always tease her about it. The dog turned out to be a great source of love for her, so I figured I would send her a nice message she can wear and remember every night!
