I love my boyfriend…'s t-shirt!

When I talk about fashion, I can’t help thinking about that sentence: “The only thing that goes out of fashion is fashion, and that’s fashion that catch on” (translation from the French: “Il n’y a qu’une chose qui se démode:  la mode, et c’est la mode qui emporte le succès”

I think I was nine when I heard that sentence for the first time; it was for our end-of-year-show, each student had to choose a poem from our handbook and recite it on the D-Day.

One of my friends wanted something short that would take him about 10 seconds to retain. I had chosen a very long one and my friend and his short sentence came and left and his performance must have lasted 7 seconds all told; but I have to admit the sentence was really good. Originally, this quote was written by Pierre Reverdy in 1956 and I think it illustrates fashion quite well .

The trend (even though I hate that word) is towards ‘boyfriend’ at the present time, I must confess I followed it, and I must add that I wore before long ago all the magazines started to talk about it (really long ago in fact, I’ve worn ‘boyfriend’ for years). But what is ‘boyfriend’ ?(yes it’s someone you kiss and you hang around with, but we’re talking about fashion, not linguistics!) something ‘boyfriend’ is a piece of clothing you borrow from your boyfriend, and which is consequently a bit too large (ideally, unless you boyfriend is 4 feet tall and weighs 62 pounds

Barack or Michelle’s t-shirt?

Obama or Kennedy? It seems that the Obama clan wants to follow the lead of the Kennedy clan: explosure of a neat and clean loving family, frenzied crowds, loved or hated; they’re a real rock star family! (careful the Osbourne!)

While Barack has started his Middle East tour and is being criticized by Al Qaeda, his wife is acclaimed for her clothes (trust me!). United States president is at the moment in the Middle East in order to “smooth over the current situation”. We all knew it was not going to be easy, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Obama’s nice speeches won’t be sufficient to convince Al Quaida’s members who judged his visit as “ridiculous” and considered it as a show off performance.

“You can’t please everybody” as we say, but at least we can count on Mrs Obama! After being largely criticized for her clothes, she’s now seen as an icon! According to Mandy Norwood (editor), she even beats Jackie Kennedy! Mandy prefers Michelle for finding her clothes more affordable, she might wear less expensive dresses but this is why people can identify themselves with (in time of recession, that’s the least we could expect!). At that rate Mrs Obama is going to wear a Wordans custom t-shirt next month…why not?! It would be fun to have America’s first lady wearing cool t-shirts!

I think we’ll have to work on special Michelle designs for our next t-shirts…till then you can still support her sweet heart with one of our funny tee shirts, and if you feel like it, you can even create one with Ben Laden…it’s up to you!

Chinglish t-shirts survive the Olympics

For those of you who haven’t heard about it, chinglish, also known as engrish, is a Chinese phenomenon that has had tourists laughing for decades. You don’t have to go there to experience it, you’ve probably seen it at home, on your tv , or even in your closet…

Chinglish is the perfect example of being lost in translation, where simple messages get translated into hilarious typos. Take for example “caution, wet floor”, an easy translation one would guess, but a sign in Beijing reads “careful Landslip Attention security”. One can imagine the embarrassment to the Chinese goverment when the world lands in Beijing and reads “To take notice of safe: The slippery are very crafty” as they are driving on the road!

So severe measures have recently been taken to get rid of all chinglish in Beijing, spelling the end of fun in China as we know it. That’s right, no more “ear spas”. “cash recycling machines” or “genitel emen washing centers”. These memorable translation catasphrophies will be lost forever…

But wait, hope arises from the least expected of places…. t-shirts! Vendors across Beijing have decided to fight back by selling chinglish t-shirts! It goes to show you can never erase history, and thanks to t-shirts, chinglish will live on after the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

You can find your very own chinglish t-shirts on www.wordans.ca, or make your own by writting your own chinglish message!

You can find more examples on http://chinglish.de. Get inspired to make your next custom t-shirt!
