I love spring

Have you noticed the migrating birds have returned from their winter vacays down south? That’s when I know old man winter has left. None of this Wiarton Willie stuff for me, thanks. Show me Canada geese, red-winged blackbirds and tree swallows the real harbingers of spring, then I’ll believe that spring has really sprung… And it has in my neck of the woods.. They’re all back! Woo-hoo!

In honour of spring and to inspire you and help you change your headspace from stuffy long sleeves and layers to fun spring and summer freshness and coolness, here are some t-shirt designs that fit the bill – for the whole family.

To create custom t-shirts for kids, simply choose either Gildan 200B Kids Ultra Cotton or Hanes 5450 Tagless T-Shirt models. Both come in great colours, perfect for the wee-folks in your life!

Bold graphics are back this spring

I still remember that Choose Life t-shirt George Michael wore in the video for Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. The size of the lettering on that t-shirt really set the tone for what the 80s were. Bright and loud! Well… bold graphics with a retro flair are back this spring. I’d even go so far as to say oversized t-shirts are back-ish (but please don’t start wearing your boyfriend’s t-shirts again… This is a BAD trend. Ladies: shoulder stitches have to line up with your shoulders otherwise you’ll look dumpy).

Retro vibe

Pair a bold graphic t-shirt from Wordans.com like the ones below (or, as always, use your own design) with black leggings, strappy wedges and a jacket for a super chic and simple spring outfit.

Thank your lucky charms, Wordans help you create unique Saint Paddy's Day t-shirts!

Saint Patrick’s Day is but 15 days away. Did you know that Montreal has had the longest running parade in all of Canada? Since 1824 we’ve celebrated with a yearly parade. In the US, the longest running parade has been in Boston (shocker!). Yep, they’ve been true to their tradition since 1737!

This year, the Montreal parade will be held on Sunday, March 14th at noon, along Ste-Catherine street, starting at Fort. You can get more information here. Here are links to other parades happening across Canada: Toronto, ON, St. John’s, NFLD, Quebec City, QC and Ottawa, ON. Normally there’s one in Vancouver too, but the Vancouver Paralympic 2010 games will be on.

Everyone is Irish on Saint Paddy’s Day, so what will you be up to? Do you go all out and deck yourself in green? Drink beer at an Irish pub? Go to the parade with the kids? If you do, you’ll need a t-shirt. AND we’re offering a 15% discount on your order. Simply use the code “Irish” when you checkout. Get one for everyone you’ll be celebrating with. They can all be the same, of slightly different. The possibilities are endless! Come to Wordans.com and create something super creative and unique for Saint Patrick’s Day 2010.

I personally like things a bit more low-key. A quote from a famous Irish author would be nice.

I like these two from James Connolly (the second one reminds me of Canadians too):

Apostles of Freedom are ever idolized when dead, but crucified when alive.

The Irishman in English literature may be said to have been born with an apology in his mouth.

Here’s are two from Robert Wilson Lynd:

Knowledge is power only if a man knows what facts not to bother with.

Life, it seems to me, is worth living, but only if we avoid the amusements of grown-up people.

But I must admit, there’s something about a graphic t to drive the sentiment and feeling home. Here are a few other suggestions:

Valentine's Day: A time to be creative

You all realize it’s Valentine’s Day this weekend, right? Say what you will but I personally love this extra themed day in the calendar-year where I could give a gift to – and receive a gift from – the man I love. Even when I was single I’d still do something for Valentine’s Day. At the very least, I’d mail funny Valentine’s Day cards to friends, just to get some laughs and some smiles (and who doesn’t like getting mail?).

Vintage Valentine's Day card

Everybody knows someone who outwardly detests Valentine’s Day (maybe that person is you) but I’m willing to bet you a million bucks that even these hardened-souls go home and secretly mark the day in some small way. They cave-in because they don’t want to be the ones to pee on a friend’s parade, on their partner/spouse’s or worse, on a kid’s parade. It doesn’t have to be cliché-laden with the sexy apparel or red-velvet-heart-shaped-box-of-chocolates…but then again, maybe it should as it would represent you better. After all, you would make fun of the ostentatiousness that Valentine’s Day has admittedly become, so you can be ironic about the whole thing with your loved one… That works too, no?

My point is, don’t let everyone else tell you how you should feel about Valentine’s Day. Make it your own! If you really feel like it’s a fake-holiday created to support the greeting-card or wedding industries… then don’t buy a card or propose (or allow yourself to be proposed to) on February 14th. It’s as simple as that, isn’t it?

I myself am proud to be a low-key-yet-cheesy-type-of-gal for Valentine’s Day. I do the whole breakfast-in-bed-with-heart-shaped-French-toast-dusted-with-icing-sugar-thing for my man, which he loves. Try this recipe from The Food Network or this one from Canadian Living (you just need a giant heart-shaped cookie cutter). This year, staying true to myself, I’m designing lounge pants for him. He spends his nights in them when we’re alone at home but they’re pretty generic. The ones I’m making are custom and will always remind him of my love for him (I know, I know… Please contain your laughter ;) .

So, I chose navy blue sweatpants. On which I’m positioning a design I created, on the upper right thigh that says “Ljubim te“, which means I love you in Slovenian (he’s Canadian-Slovenian) and the kicker is that I’m flipping the design 180 degrees so that he can read it when he looks down (kinda like in the image below). Awww, are your teeth decaying from the sweetness? Hehe.

I haven’t been working at Wordans for very long but this whole design-your-own-stuff has really opened my eyes to the infinite possibilities! Check it out, you can customize your own t-shirt or tanktop or hoodie or sweatpants or tote bag for yourself, for colleagues, for friends, for family or for the kids in your life.

So for Valentine’s Day, show-off your creativity! Be ironic, be sexy, be funny, be sarcastic, be bitter, be romantic… Just be creative! You can choose one of the designs we already have, or you can upload your own! AND, until February 15th, get a 15% discount on your order by using the code: Love – as you check-out.

How do you feel about Valentine’s Day? Are you planning anything special? A DIY project? We’d love to know!

I love my boyfriend…'s t-shirt!

When I talk about fashion, I can’t help thinking about that sentence: “The only thing that goes out of fashion is fashion, and that’s fashion that catch on” (translation from the French: “Il n’y a qu’une chose qui se démode:  la mode, et c’est la mode qui emporte le succès”

I think I was nine when I heard that sentence for the first time; it was for our end-of-year-show, each student had to choose a poem from our handbook and recite it on the D-Day.

One of my friends wanted something short that would take him about 10 seconds to retain. I had chosen a very long one and my friend and his short sentence came and left and his performance must have lasted 7 seconds all told; but I have to admit the sentence was really good. Originally, this quote was written by Pierre Reverdy in 1956 and I think it illustrates fashion quite well .

The trend (even though I hate that word) is towards ‘boyfriend’ at the present time, I must confess I followed it, and I must add that I wore before long ago all the magazines started to talk about it (really long ago in fact, I’ve worn ‘boyfriend’ for years). But what is ‘boyfriend’ ?(yes it’s someone you kiss and you hang around with, but we’re talking about fashion, not linguistics!) something ‘boyfriend’ is a piece of clothing you borrow from your boyfriend, and which is consequently a bit too large (ideally, unless you boyfriend is 4 feet tall and weighs 62 pounds
